“It’s a Dominican thing I guess. We always ask each other. ¿Estas contento? ¿Te sientes bien? It’s important to ask, if the person you’re with is happy, if they’re okay. Those things shouldn’t be taken for granted.”

Slap this in the dictionary next to the definition of 'feel good romance'. This was lovely! Wonderful characters, competent plot, romance that legitimately had me clutching my chest. And a romance novel starring a main character from the Caribbean? Yes! Please! Thank you! Though I'm at the other end of the chain, it was still so nice to read. It made me happy in the way that Kai Ashante Wilson's books makes me happy; just like I love seeing AAVE and slang used in high fantasy and magical worlds, I loved seeing slang in the language of love (along with liberal Spanish). I can't get over how ROMANTIC this book is, especially because of Nesto and how he expresses his emotions. I melted every time he asked, 'Are you happy, baby?' And Jude is me! High five for gay book lovers who don't know how to emotion.

The writing wasn't amazing, and while I know Mistys exist in the world, her villainy got kind of one-note and OTT at the same time. Still, this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. My first from the author, but definitely not the last!

I loved every single part of this book. Nesto and Jude's love is so pure and genuine. The way they learn to support each other and open up about their pasts was breathtaking. I can't believe this is Herrera's debut. Her storytelling ability and writing was so crisp and refreshing.

LOVED. LOVED. LOVED.

Adriana Herrera writes a steamy sex scene! So for those of you underprepared for that, get a fan and a cold towel, because this one has some scorchers.

Nesto and Jude are complex thoughtful three-dimensional characters that made me want to immediately eat some Afro-Caribbean food (must find this food truck NOW!) and reach for the second book in this series.

I liked these people, the way they react to the world, how they give each other chances to apologize and correct behaviors. I like books with a reasonable confrontation and resolution, considering that the book is about adults.

It even made me say "Ithaca sounds nice". (I've been to Ithaca and it did not feel as special as what I read).

Thank you Adriana Herrera for these people and a glimpse into their lives.
