Dance Dance Dance is the fourth and last book in the Rat series. Each book just kept getting better and better. Full of Murakami's magical reality, the sheep man, jazz and pop culture.

Ugh.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated

The sheep man and the Dolphin hotel is back! Been a while since I read “A Wild Sheep Chase” but this is the “sequel”. The quote "You really are a little odd, you know?" pretty much sums up this story. A mid-30s guy not sure what he wants out of life befriends a 13 year old with rich eccentric parents, reconnect with a movie star high school friend and falls in love with the hotel clerk.

Liked
-found it funny the use of a character who was an author called “Hiraku Makimura” clearly an alternative Murakami
-Bit of a murder mystery underlying the narrative

Dislike
-slightly uncomfortable with the main characters (34) conversations early in the book with brother main character who is only 13.

To Remember

The release of sleep
“the surrender I must have been waiting for silently filled the void. Very deftly and ever so quick. Sleep came over me.”

A skewed take on capitalism
“Waste is the fuel of contradiction, and contradiction activates the economy, and an active economy creates more waste.”
