I didn't want to get my hopes up with this one. It has a higher rating on this site and I have been burned a few times with books by Heyer that are others absolute favorites which were just so-so for me (Arabella, These Old Shades, Cotillion). And so, I was happily surprised. My top five Heyer list is getting crowded- I keep having to decide who makes the cut and without taking a gander at the titles I think this one does.
I really enjoyed this one. Our heroine becomes an author by writing a story based on people she met at her first Season. The villian turns out to be a Duke whose godmother is the grandmother of our heroine.
The most notable thing about this (very good) book is that THE HERO SAYS TO THE HEROINE: “WILL YOU LET ME MOUNT YOU WHILE YOU ARE IN TOWN?”!!!!
Then, when she protests that would be quite improper, HE SAYS, “I HATE TO SEE YOU SO UNWORTHILY MOUNTED”!!!!!

I actually read this in one night, and I'm so proud of myself for doing so!
Heyer is just a genius. The characters were developed so beautifully throughout the book - I especially loved how Phoebe became more true to herself, and Sylvester became more humble and loving. The flaws and how they impacted characters' decisions were so realistic! Like everyone's thought processes and how they influenced their actions made complete sense for each character.

Super enjoyable and funny one, while also showing the effect that emotional abuse (Phoebe) and grief (Sylvester) can have on someone’s conduct.
I took one star off for just a tidge too much bickering.
