I listened to the audiobook version of this, and I’m so glad I did since it’s narrated by Chris himself! So it was nice to listen to his familiar voice, that british accent and his very distinct humour! It was entertaining and I really love how honest Chris was about a lot of things and didn’t just sugar coat this and that about his decade living in Japan…

I wanted more from this book - the cover was beautiful and it sounded like a good read (knowing nothing about Chris Broad). I gave it a good shot but it wasn't immersive and lacked any depth. I can see why Abroad in Japan fans would like it though and there were a couple of laughs.

A fun, comical account of a typical Brit in a foreign land. Broad paints a pretty good picture of Japanese customs, work life, dating, food and leisure. It felt like a book focused on what it’s like learning the language at times, but it picked up toward the end when Broad got around the country a bit more and seemed to better assimilate to the culture. The parts of Japanese culture that were below surface level, like the country’s views on North Korea, were the most interesting.

I love abroad in Japan, and grew up watching Chris. I do think this book is quite focused on his early time in Japan (2011-13), and it’s quite jarring as the later parts aren’t as well thought out. However, this was a fun read, and I wish Chris all the best!!
