An absolutely beautiful memoir exploring the most impactful moments of the beginning of Chris's journey in Japan. Regardless of if you're a fan or not I could see most people enjoying the mostly light-hearted adventures of Chris-sensai.
I read along with audiobook, it was fantastic! You can hear Chris's wit and humour, and it brings the novel alive as though you're listening to many of his podcasts in row, lol. He made me laugh several times where if I had just read the the prose itself I wouldn't have even chuckled. I think it's definitely worth having as a companion to this novel.
I've been watching his content since the beginning of his channel, he's my original inspiration for trying to learn Japanese and aspiring to explore the country myself one day. Perhaps I am a bit biased towards his content, but this honestly is a well crafted, documented, and explored novel that Chris Broad should be proud to have written.
The final line of his novel, before the epilogue, is an idiom that really struck accord with me, "To live in fear is not to live at all." I've been letting fear conquer my dreams, but after reading this book I feel like I should push myself to go outside of my confort zone just like Chris did.
