While Broad's time in Japan was later than mine, like him technology played a huge role in shaping my time there and I loved his look at rural Japan and the people around him as he grew from a JALT to a You Tuber. We visited some of the same places. A fun, light read and a different take on the typical gaijin stories.

My local Waterstones had been pushing this book for so long (first in hardback then as a book of the month in paperback and now in the buy one get one half price section) that I finally succumbed and bought it.  The first 200 pages or so are about the first 2-3 years that the author spent in Japan working as an English teacher under the JET program.   This part of the book was pretty interesting, although if you are hoping for information about the history or religion of Japan, then you'll be disappointed.  This is very much a book about how the Japanese currently live.  Food plays a big part (mainly greasy fried chicken, and nothing for vegetarians!).  The final third of the book covers a much longer time period and each chapter picks something he did as a you-tuber.   I had no idea he was a you-tuber with millions of followers, and found this section much less interesting.  Obviously some of the ways of living in Japan appear strange to Westerners, but the author does a reasonable job of explaining these ways without appearing to laugh too much at them.  A very easy book to finish quickly.
