I should preface this by saying I love Japan, I've always loved the idea of teaching English out there, and I wanted to be a YouTuber when I was at school. So yeah... Chris Broad is basically living my dream life. No surprises here then that I really enjoyed this book.

Chapters are split into nice bite size chunks, and it's really easy to read. A good amount of humour and some amazing anecdotes. Well worth a read!

Neither great literature nor the best introduction to Japan, but the author’s descriptions of life as an English teacher in Japan - the people, the food, the culture - struck a chord and brought back many fond memories. It has the added bonus of being a very quick and easy read.

Took a long time to get through since it was the audiobook and I was having to wait and listen with my husband…we started on our trip to Japan, but once we got home, we had very little time together to finish so I ended up doing a speed listen the day it was due back at the library. I enjoyed it, although I felt like the bulk of the book focused on the initial move to and adaptation period to Japan, and the shift from teacher to YouTuber and documentary film maker seemed to get very little attention/time in the book. Perhaps this is due to a lot of that already being on YouTube, and therefore not being worth memorializing in a memoir?

I've enjoyed watching Abroad in Japan for years and it was nice to get some more of Chris's backstory.
