I was not sure if I would like this book (not expecting that it was non-fiction), but I am taking a trip to Japan this year and i really enjoyed the struggles of the author and his commitment to learning and living a life in Japan. I'm going to check out his youtube channel too!

This was a fun, quick read. Painted an accurate picture of first impressions of living in Japan, and was entertainingly written.
Final third was a bit meandering. I suppose the interesting part was about the struggles of adjusting and the newness of living in Japan, so once he was succeeding then the story wasn’t quite as engaging. Still enjoyed this, and was a great throwback to our trip in Japan.

As a fan of the YouTube series, I feel as if I’ve already seen the movie. That enhanced my reading experience because I could envision some of the scenes and I could hear the voices of Chris, Natsuki and Ryotaro. The book offers many interesting stories and details that are not covered in the YouTube series.
