I had a stack of Amy Tan books purchased at a used book sale a number of years ago and decided this was the time to read them. This book was the last of that stack and my favorite. Sometimes her ‘bad mom’ theme gets tiresome but in this book it didn’t get in the way too much. Others have reviewed the book quite nicely so I’ve decided to just type up a few quotes that spoke to me for one reason of another. But each of those pages caused me to stop reading and process what I’d just read.

“Love is tricky. It is never mundane or daily. You can never get used to it.You have to walk with it, then let it walk with you.”

“Now I am content. With Yiban, I love and am loved, fully and freely, nothing expected, more than enough received.”

“... whereas men rely on more primitive functions. See rock, chase. Danger, sniff, go find. Smoke cigar later. I resent Simon’s carelessness. And yet, I have to admit, I find it seductive...”

“The odor is trapped in my brain as visceral memory, emotional residue of stomach-cramping fear and sadness, but without the reason that caused it.”

Kwan really bugged me.

This is one of my all time favorite books. You can here the characters voices in your head while you are reading which is very rare. The story is interesting but it is the actual characters that will stay with you long after you read the final sentence.

This book started out slow, but once I got into it, I really liked it. My niece, born in China. is also named Olivia, so I saw her face whenever Kwan calls the narrator "Libby-ah." I was completely charmed by Kwan and her yin people.
