This was one of those "We find what we need when we need it" books. It all but violently fell on my face in the library.
Holy snit. The last page made me sob. Tan is right. Love. I hugged this book and cried.
10/10 worth the read. It was also really cool learning about Chinese culture.
I can't believe yet another ghost story helped me process grief.

Beautifully profound and amazing, soulful writing. I cannot vocalize my thoughts on this without giving away spoilers. But oh, talk about reading something at the right time! This is a dedication to sisterhood, to friendships, to loyalty, to love of all varieties. I would be raving about this wonderful book for a long time to come!

What can I say? I love Amy Tan. I do. Susannah gave me a really ransacked copy of this she found some where and I read it on the bus ride from New York to Martha's Vineyard to see my mom. The cover kept falling off and when I got to Rhoad Island some fat dude took up too much of the seat and crumbled some of the loose pages.
But, I loved it and it, duh, took place in SF and I moved there two weeks later, so I had a lot of fun reading it.

It took me a while to get into it and I found some of the main characters really hard to like, but I loved the style and the way all the story lines flowed together.

my aunt thuy-lieu lent me this. esp. poignant given the circumstances of her life and subject matter of the book.

Just couldn't get into it, ok, but...meh

This book centers around the relationships of Olivia, an American born half-Chinese young adult. The most important relationship the book focuses on is Olivia's relationship with her half-sister Kwan, who was born in China. Olivia finds her sister strange and out of touch. Kwan frequently tells Olivia about the conversations she has with the dead and about her past life. Most chapters begin with Olivia's present life, discussing her interactions with Kwan and her ex-husband, Simon, and end with a story about Kwan's past-life.

I wouldn't label this book as exciting, but it is engaging, and the characters are wonderfully real and well-developed. And I definitely did not see the ending coming...

It took me a second to get used to the different voices and time periods, but I loved it once I got going. The juxtaposition of the two female leads was beautiful. Maybe my favorite Tan novel so far.
