Leuk boek, krijg er helemaal RuPaul vibes van. Vind alleen dat er iets te lang over de inleiding van het boek wordt gedaan en heb nu nog noet echt het gevoel gehad dat ik echt in de dragwereld zat. Denk als hier de focus meer op lag het boek veel sterker en meer betekenis zou hebben.

Die Drag Geschichte und die Romance habe ich sehr geliebt, aber ich mag es immer nicht, wenn Menschen als schlechte Freund*innen bezeichnet werden, weil sie etwas von sich nicht teilen.. niemand hat ein Anrecht darauf, ALLES erzählt zu bekommen, was sie im Prinzip nichts angeht. Das nervt mich immer ein bisschen und passiert hier leider auch. Sonst aber wirklich ein sehr gutes Buch, dachte ich lese noch ein Kapitel vom neuen Buch vor dem Einschlafen und drei Stunden später hatte ich es verschlungen.

Ik heb gehuild bij dit boek, nu kan ik niet anders dan 5 sterren geven! Hoe kan ik me zo verwant voelen met een jongen van net 18 zou je kunnen denken (ik ben een vrouw van 32) Maar ik heb mij ook begeven in de (dans) auditie wereld en het bracht herinneringen terug!
Een van de eerste bladzijdes verteld Robin al hoe het voelt om te dansen en dat was zo herkenbaar!
Er zit lekkere teenage drama in, de relatie tussen Robin en zijn moeder vind ik erg goed beschreven en het is super leuk en interessant om een kijkje in de drag wereld te krijgen!

Robin Cooper’s life is falling apart. While his friends are ready to go to uni, all he seems to be getting is rejection letters from most/all drama schools of the UK and Robin’s life seems to be spiralling. Unsure of himself and his talent, he and his best friends take him to a local gay bar on his birthday to cheer him up and, when there, they watch a local drag show. And Robin gets a strong reaction and he should, in the words of RuPaul, Sashay away.
But how can he get to grips with drag performing when he has a secret boyfriend who won’t acknowledge in public, his mother can talk for England, his best friends are planning their futures without him and the new boy at school is making Robin’s heart beat a little faster?
Well, this is a hoot of a read! An unapologetic queer cackle of a read with extra glitter thrown in for good measure!
This feels like such a strong UKYA contemporary debut, tackling the issues of friendship, LGBTQIA+, homophobia bullying while touching on a gentle romance and coming out in your own pace. Am intrigued to see if George writes a sequel or a companion novel to follow one or two of the characters and tackle these issues further.
Now, there is one or two things some readers might not warm to. The first few chapters are a little slower in pace (setting up the story and characters) and some of the characters’s decisions (not one in perfect).
But I devoured this while in lockdown as it’s one of those books where, once I started, I couldn’t stop. Fans of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and RuPaul’s Drag Race is going to love this summery glitterball of a read.

In all seinen Farben ist eine herzerwärmende Geschichte über Liebe, Freundschaft und dem Weg zu sich selbst.
Der Autor schafft es Robins Gefühle und Gedanken perfekt festzuhalten und wenn über das Thema Drag gesprochen wird, merkt man, dass der Autor selbst Teil dieser Welt ist und weiß, wie man darüber schreibt, ohne zu klischeehaft, kitschig oder gar diskriminierend zu werden.
Die Story geht mir persönlich sehr nahe, da ich auch immer ein Bühnenmensch war und ich mich deshalb gut in Robin hineinversetzen konnte, wenn er im Tanztraining war, die Absage bekam oder einen Auftritt hatte.
Die Sprache ist jugendlich und erfrischend und passt zu der Bubble, die in dem Buch vertreten ist - das merkt man auch ganz stark bei der Danksagung des Autors. Das kann am Anfang etwas anstrengend sein, aber man gewöhnt sich daran und es ist einmal etwas anderes, vor allem in Zeiten wie diesen.
Die Charaktere sind alle sehr realistisch gezeichnet und verschieden, da findet jeder jemanden den er mag und es ist auch möglich alle Charaktere auf ihre Art und Weise zu mögen.
Schlussendlich hat mir an diesem Buch sehr gut gefallen, das die Haupthandlung nicht die Liebesgeschichte war, sondern Robins Selbstfindungsprozess - so etwas findet man leider viel zu selten, vor allem im Bereich der LGBTQ*-Literatur.
