I am fortunate to have read a lot of non-Western literature, however unfortunately that has not included much literature set in Asia. I know this is a fantasy series, but I really enjoyed the Japanese setting and characters and customs. Only three stars because I liked it, but felt it dragged at some points. However, I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates Japan (hi, anime fans!) and Asian culture, and is looking for a good magical realism-type fantasy series.

The writing felt abrupt sometimes, and I'm not a fan of people falling madly in love at first sight (from a substantial distance especially). However, this was a quick, minimal-fluff read with some interesting characters whose futures I'm now invested in.

Across the Nightingale Floor is set in an imagined time and place, based on feudal Japan. A young man is rescued, after his family is killed, by a man who adopts him. He discovers he has unusual skills that are highly prized, and bring him a great deal of danger and adventure. The setting is lush and luminous, the characters are compelling and it is a great story of loyalty, treachery, love, loss and honour.
