Fantastic book, I was immersed with the first chapter, the characters are well written.
You ca 't help but feel empathy towards them, genuine pain, and the betrayals make your heart ache.
Some characters I truly despise, others feel sorry for, as they deserved better.
The story is fast flowing, engaging, and keeps you interested the whole way through, can't wait to start book 2.

Across the Nightingale Floor had many things that I enjoyed, along with a few things that I think could have been better. Many of the characters felt a bit too shallow to me, and by the end of the book I felt that I had little more than their names to associate them with. Also, the pacing of the story felt a bit uneven; some of the events that I found most interesting in the book were resolved very quickly, while other sections seemed slightly dragged out.
On the other hand, I found the setting and atmosphere of the story to be quite interesting, and the writing was generally good — occasionally even brilliant. Although the plot was somewhat predictable and easy to follow, it did manage to make me feel strangely drawn into the strange universe in which it takes place.

I've read this Book in the german version. First, approximately 15 years ago and now just recently.
Only this i year found out about the prequel of this series. After reading that one, i started the series over. Compared to the prequel, this book feels less polished, but is still enjoyable, eventhough noticably a childrens/ youth book.

Beautifully written. It reads like a folk tale with colorful language and traditional, but strong characters.

I loved this AND I need to caution readers that this is a fantasy. It is not historical fiction. The other reviews helped me tremendously on this. I thought I knew at least a bit about Japan and this really didn't match. As long as you realize it's not a history lesson, this is a wonderful book. The style of writing is filled with vivid, lush descriptions and the performances, especially Kevin Gray's, enhance the story and make it come to life in a dramatic and even believable way. I also really enjoyed the structure of the book - one chapter from his point of view the next from hers. I don't want to write too much about the story, I don't want to give it away.
I would recommend this book to readers who can view this through the suspension of disbelief and just go on the adventures .

I first read this series during my teenage years, and really enjoyed it. For some mysterious whim of the universe I felt an urge to reread it now, during the pandemic, probably because all of us are going through a psychological regression to simpler times.
I still like this book. It still feels magical and the author manages to create an interesting world loosely based on Japan in feudal times, a world filled with an atmosphere that is both brutal and beautiful. Nature almost takes a main role in the story, making the world feel alive and dynamic. Hearn has a talent for poetically describing the smells and sounds of nature, like for example the singing of different birds (which for us “birders” actually has a deeper meaning, adding layers to the story). Heavy rain can delay characters for weeks and knowledge about the seasonal changes of weather is important for survival. I really enjoy how nature sets a certain tone and tempo to the story. The character development is good and I actually think the characters have nice layers to them. The book also has one really good and intriguing love story between two smaller characters, and another one between the two main characters that are far cheesier now than I remember it to be. Still readable tho, luckily.
