This was on my TBR pile for a couple years but I honestly never thought I’d read it because it’s so long. But I finished this 25 hour audiobook quicker than I finish some 10 hr audiobooks. I really enjoyed following Vin and Kelsier around on their adventures. And I’m glad there wasn’t toooooo much politics to bore me. You could argue Vin is a bit of a Mary Sue though.
Great book, but why did the last scene have to be so cheesy? Biggest let down of the whole book.

I trudged through the first 70% but oh my goodness was it worth it for the final 30%!!!!! Everything just suddenly came together and I couldn’t put it down. Vin is the badass I simply will never ever be. Do NOT talk to me about Kelsier. 4.5⭐️

I really enjoyed this book at the beginning but then it got weird. The italic first person introspection was super weird when some of the book was in first person anyway but then it jumped around to different people so sometimes you had to really focus to figure out who’s thoughts you were suddenly reading. I did enjoy the plot but I feel that this book could’ve accomplished what it did with half the size, after seeing how it ended it made so much planning and heavy detail from the beginning unnecessary for the readers to even know. And while I liked the ending and the stakes were high and the plot was exciting, I don’t know if I cared about the characters enough to warrant reading the rest of the series.
Date finished - 30th October 2024
Setting - Rukmini Nagar, Amravati – my room, late nights. I had just passed one of the toughest exams I’ve ever written, and I wanted to unwind for a while and focus on things I’d been ignoring for years. Maybe read a little.
Mood - I was expecting a lot more from the book, but I was left unsatisfied.
Why I picked it up - Someone on YouTube strongly recommended Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere, and this was the first book of the series.
What It’s About -
Vin, a child thief, learns that she can consume different metals and harness their powers. She’s helped by Kelsier and his crew, who are leading a coup against the Lord Ruler—a tyrant worshipped as a god. Their ultimate goal is to kill him.
How It Made Me Feel -
I was super excited to start this book, and it felt great during the first few chapters. But the world—doomed, with constant ashfall and everything painted in black—didn’t resonate with me. I really tried to love this book, but I failed.
I wanted to get back into reading, but after finishing this, I genuinely doubted whether I was someone who could enjoy stories at all. I bought a physical copy of this book, and I regret spending money on it.
What I Liked -
I loved the relationship Vin had with Kelsier. How she hated everyone at the start but gradually grew to trust him and his decisions. It reminded me of The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda, Joel and Ellie, or Kratos and Atreus. Like those stories, Vin eventually becomes strong enough to take care of herself.
I also liked how Kelsier became a martyr and a symbol of hope for the skaa.
My Favorite Line From The Book That I Highlighted -
“Sometimes, I worry that I'm not the hero everyone thinks I am.”
What I Didn't Like -
The pacing felt slow. It was a decent book, but it didn’t do much to ignite a passion for reading. It’s been a while since I finished it, and I’m writing this review nearly 10 months later. After completing the trilogy, I think this is the weakest book of the three.
My Final Thoughts -
I rated this a 4 out of 10. Unfortunately, I don’t remember much from when I read it, but I do remember that I almost gave up on reading altogether because of it. I want to talk more about this book, but there just isn’t much that comes to mind. There will be some books like The Song of Achilles that drive me to write pages, and others like this one, where I can’t write much—despite wanting to.
Moments About The Book That I Still Think About Months/Years Later -
Kelsier’s death. I can still remember him smiling clearly.
