This was my first Sanderson book and to be completely honest, the first 250 or so pages were hard to get through. I actually considered DNFing at one point, but the way everyone talks about this book was what made me continue and I’m very glad that I did.

Yes, the magic system building is extensive. I know that the hard magic system used here is one of Sanderson signatures but it didn’t excite me. Everytime a character would go deep into the weeds explaining a metal my eyes would glaze over.

But ultimately it was the characters and their connections they kept me reading and had me in love with the story by the end. Especially Vin and her journey. It makes sense that Sanderson teaches writing courses: it’s clear he’s a man who understands how to driver satisfying story beats and great character arcs.

At times I laughed. At times I cried. And by the end I was dying to get started on the next book in the trilogy. I cannot believe he originally wrote this as a standalone! Is he crazy!!! This can’t be the end!

Can’t say much more without spoilers, which you should avoid at all costs. Let yourself be taken on the journey. Don’t ruin the surprises, good and bad.
