well written and constantly introduced memorable characters, super engaging and in the moment was happy to be reading it for the first time - but urasawa centering a story around a single character will always be underwhelming (20th century too w friend)

Its been a very long time since a manga or even a comic book for that matter roped me in, from the first volume. The climax for this volume took a really intense turn and I can't wait to read the next book.

Note: Review for whole manga
It was really tense from the beginning to the end. The plot had a lot of twists and turns and always kept me on the edge of my seat. The climax was really creepy, and somewhat sad. The ending was somewhat abrupt (or did I just have a hard time getting over the fact that it was over?), and did end on a semi cliffhanger. I finished the story wondering who the true monster was. Was it Johan, the psycho serial killer who the main character saved? Was it the people who made Johan the way he is? Was it his mom? I really liked how the ending showed Johan's thoughts and doubts.

Of all the stories I've read, Johan would be one of creepiest villains. No, he doesn't look creepy, but that just makes him even creepier. I liked the doctor's ex-fiancée and kinda hoped that they'd get back together because it seemed that they did kind of care for each other. I'm glad she picked herself up at the end though. I really liked the journalist, who met the doctor along the way, especially how carefree he was, even with the government after him. Lastly, the main character's morals and how he was determined to save as many people he could, even when they accused him of being the serial killer.

Good book. some annoying characters in the beginning, but once the murders start the story really picks up.

This was super engaging and such a unique concept! Doctor Tenma was a very nuanced and realistic character to follow and I loved getting to see the corruption of politics through the medical profession. Such interesting discussions were brought up and it was so different and almost relatable for someone who also wants to become a doctor. The suspense and mystery were incredible and I cannot wait to continue reading!
