This feels more like a crime novel than a manga. It’s utterly engrossing and catches the reader from the start. Cannot wait to read more of the series!
This is an excellent start to what looks to be a great suspense/thriller manga. The drama and story are perfect, and the art is very good.

Monster is one of the best first volume manga novels I've read in a long while.I read the complete first volume of this suspenseful manga in one breathless sitting and I was completely hooked from the very outset. This manga is set in the mid 80’s shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall, separating what was formerly known as East and West Germany. Dr. Kenzō Tenma is an extremely promising young doctor who migrated from Japan to Düsseldorf, West Germany, intending to further his studies in medicine. He soon realizes how political a profession he has when he refuses an order from the head of the doctor’s association by saving the life of a young boy. Monster had me on edge the whole way through and seamlessly probes the boundaries of morality.

This was really fun to read. I liked this about as much as I like 20th Century Boys, and I'm definitely going to read the rest of this.
An intriguing start to the story, but I wish we knew more about Johan (or whatever his real name is) and why he feels compelled to kill. I suppose that's what the mystery is all about? I don't really know anything about the German reunification period, and maybe that would have provided some sort of context. For now, I'm a bit lost. I do like Dr. Tenma, and I hope he can steer clear of blame. What he believes as a doctor is the truth - every life is worth saving. Right now, I'm guessing that Johan and his sister, if she is his sister even, were either adopted or abducted from East Germany. He is clearly the one who killed their "parents" and his "sister" witnessed it. I guess we'll learn more over time.
