I was sucked into the story and found it somewhat addictive. So many internal conflicts and questions/reflections throughout reading. Call me crazy, but I was looking to read a disturbing thriller and I do believe that this delivered some of that vision - however, I did predict the major twist at the end. Although, I was still surprised at different moments. But also, then I was thinking about how that may have been the point - writing it so I obviously knew what was going to happen and just reading while the main character figured it out. 


Regardless, I enjoyed reading this, just have some questions.

This is by far my least favorite of Hillier's works: Jar of Hearts is the most heavy-handed and graphic out of the author's catalogue. I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters and the violent depictions of on-page SA were incredibly hard to stomach (there are at least 3 and one of them happens in chapter 2 or 3). If you plan on giving this one a read, please know child murder and SA are both large parts of this narrative and unavoidable.

Such a dark and riveting story, I couldn’t put it down!

This is the second book I've read by Hillier, and I have some thoughts. She thinks that she is intentionally writing her characters to have unlikeable qualities, but it's clear that the actual unlikeable parts of them are her own beliefs and biases seeping in. Fatphobia, classism, a weirdly intense disdain for millennials - these are clearly coming from the author, not the characters. Hillier's plots are decent, and she keeps things moving at a quick pace, but I likely won't pick up another of her books.
