Started off a little awkward and cringe but once the plot kept going it really didn't stop though, which had it's its perks and downfalls. Exposition took upnquite some time at the start which was very much needed as the plot that followed was very dense and didn't always have enough breaks to process and have a moment of rest. Though knowing there is a sequel I also understand why everything was so densely packed. There were a lot of different ideas and plotlines and clues stated up that will likely come back in the second book. It does provide some perspective. I think without knowing this was part of a series I would have found it too much and too overwhelming. 
All in all not bad at all though, good for the spooky season, very diverse as well since the MC is disabled and gay with his love interest and antagonist being trans and gay and some queer and disabled b characters mixed in as well. 
There were quite some characters introduced in this book of which I hope we get to see more in future book(s). I feel like their role was too big to be just a background character but too small to just leave out. It would be a pity so I'm curious to see about that. 
A fun spooky read that does feel like a debut if I had sto summarise.

A delightfully spooky, humorous and marvellously plot twisty romp that hooked with the promise of ghost-filled antics, that I’m happy to report did NOT disappoint! 

I’ve yet to visit York (the setting for Sixteen Souls) myself but Rosie Talbot’s beautifully atmospheric world-building and wonderfully descriptive prose really brought the city and all of its rich, uniquely haunted history to life. 

I also loved the dialogue, and the use of British colloquialisms, which made all of the characters’ interactions feel waay more realistic —it was almost as if Talbot had eavesdropped on actual ghostly conversations, making for an incredibly immersive and entertaining reading experience.

Our loveably endearing cast of characters helped with that too. Aside from the obvious villains and a few of the Mouldy Oldies (old spirits who essentially govern the city’s ghost residents) , I pretty much loved them all. Particularly Charlie (our reluctant, ghost seeing MC) and his spectral, ride or die besties Ollie and Heather— as well as the highly amusing George Villiers, who won me over with his rather amusing antics. I also liked fellow seer Sam whose adorably sweet romance with Charlie gave me supernatural Heartstopper vibes that I’m excited to see more of.

If you’re looking for something spooky to read this autumn, but also love heartwarming found family vibes, LGBTQIA and disability rep —then I thoroughly recommend checking this out. Just make sure to check the TWs beforehand.

Descriptions of suicide. Death. Violence.

Main character is a double amputee, secondary character is trans.

I really unique idea, I've never read anything like this before. Lots of action but I did want more of the quiet moments in between.
