I didn't particularly enjoy this one, admittedly it isn't one of my favorite genres, but I thought the blurb sounded interesting and gave it a go. I found it pretty boring and had to force myself to keep reading hoping for a good ending, alas I was disappointed by that also. On a positive note the book is beautifully written and the author does know how to tell a tale, perhaps I just choose the wrong novel for my introduction to his work?

Hadn't read im before. Surpised pleasantly at how memorable some of his turns of phrase are. Not always but nice surprises sprinkled throughout.

Bit different from what I normally like. I quite liked the way it was written in terms of plot. I found all the spy meeting stuff a bit boring. The ending was a bit abrupt and unsatisfying. Descriptions of women particularly feel like they were written by a man.

Read it for the end please, just do a favour and read it for the end and it will not be a waste of time I promise. The beginning and even the middle sucks quite a bit...but...the end will make it worthwhile totally.
Graphic: Islamophobia

A very interesting book set in the present-day state of post-9/11. It shows us the situation in Germany, the place where many of the 9/11 attackers originated. Following a young Muslim boy with a dubious background coming to claim the money accumulated illegally by his father. An idealistic lawyer and wealthy banker unexpectedly decide to help him, but three different spy agencies with differing interests somehow have a stake in the matter. It is interesting how each agency and even each person sees the situation in a completely different way according to what they want to see and the prejudices they come with. In the end, it seems that humanity itself is lost, and the perceived humanity has an agenda of its own.

A classic Le Carré. Scalpel-fine dissection of how state power is brought to bear, along with fully realized characters. Brutal. Books to read when you want to be angry.
