3.5 stars. This book is unconventional which works really well. The layout of photographs interspersed with handwritten notes is an interesting way to present the content. Unfortunately, I think the content is lacking in some regards. Prince was an exceptional musician but there's very little about the music in this book. There is very little to learn here that Wikipedia or general interviews don't already shed light on.

Dan Piepenbring was boring and definitely did not need to take up 40+ pages of the book with his stupid intro.

Prince was, of course, incredible and you are reminded of his genius with every word he writes. Would have been fine with a shorter book with much less of Dan.

I’m left feeling in awe, but also sad and kinda pissed that this is how Prince’s “memoir” ended up. Missing him more than ever now.

I loved this book mostly for the timeless photos of Prince. I know he was a private person, but I was really hoping he would delve deeper into the details of his life. I especially wanted to know more about his days when he was signed to Warner Brothers.

This book was published three years after Prince's passing. It's like getting a personal glimpse into his life for a short while, and it's both beautiful and heartwarming.

I was already a Prince fan and this book only made me love him more. He was one of a kind - a treasure - always staying true to himself and his craft. He was a brave trailblazer who inspired many, and this book is a great way to remember him or get a glimpse into what kind of person he was.

I really enjoyed this book. I was trying to think of the best way to describe it. I was a diehard Prince fan in the 80s and 90s but as Prince took to new paths in his music, my life went in other directions as well. I remain deeply impacted by his entire persona and the way he moved through the world. So for me, I really appreciated the relatively short timeframe covered in this book. Although this is actually a very short "memoir" due to his untimely death, it felt very intimate. This was like going to visit someone you deeply admire and respect and they sit you down with their photo albums, scrap books, and precious mementos. Then you look around and can see how their home is steeped in the essence of themselves. And you realize you have been seeing a small, golden glimpse, the kintsugi. My only wish would have been that he could have completed his writing but I feel that would have taken decades. I think Prince got out of here with his mystique intact, but still managed to inspire us to "[t]ry to create...Just start by creating your day. Then create your life.” Co-author Dan Piepenbring's presence could have been woven in more smoothly throughout instead of sort of book-ending the work, but I believe it was left as it in order to preserve Prince's authentic voice. The two hadn't gotten around to actually blending their voices on the page so maybe Piepenbring felt it best to leave it kind of rough-draft like rather than improvise without the express approval of The Kid.
