This is a solid start to a series, and a fascinating world. And I loved 98% of it.

The bit I did not love was Roan. He treated her like scum from the start, and that's bullshit given what we find out at the end. And the only moment the heroine did something I thought was dumb, in this whole book, was when she let it slide and spoke to him again.

Fuck Roan. Fuck whatever his grand plan is. He has treated her like shit to scrape off his shoe, and he's been lying to her and manipulating her and using her since before they met. Fuck him entirely, and if he doesn't have a good excuse and she forgives him and becomes his partner / lover / whatever, then I will shitcan this series so fast it will leave skid marks. I am not down with strong women forgiving, excusing, tolerating, and loving abusive men, and that's what Roan is - an abuser and a gaslighter.

April Buddy Read (BotM) with the MacHalos.

3.75 stars.

To my surprised I enjoyed this one- I highly recommend the audio! I liked Cassandra the main character quite a bit but her character did get a bit half-cocked as things went on. She was certainly a smart and resourceful woman however, and I'm definitely going to read the other books to see how she gets on.

I found the other characters certainly interesting - there were actually not a ton of others and I hope there isn't any love drama coming up. The setting was really fun, I really love London so no surprise there. I missed having another female character - it was pretty much Cassandra and a few guys.

There is something about a well written, well rounded, Urban Fantasy that soothes my soul and catches my imagination on fire. This book, once we pass the prologue, it feels like a modern detective novel, where a FBI Agent faces the mind of a psychotic killer. That ambiance is soon dashed as the truth of magic and the hidden realms slams into Cassandra with a violence that leaves the reader stunned.

In other words? It's the perfect introduction to a new world that promises to be as complex as it is action filled. There is a touch of romance, a wealth of danger and enough fast moving pieces to keep the story clipping along.

Well done.

What an amazing first book, introducing us to the series.

Cassandra an FBI agent from the states visits the UK to do a profile on a killer who appears to be mimicking certain aspects of Jack the Ripper, During the investigation her eyes are truly opened to the world of the fae, and a deeper involvement she has to them than she could imagine. Throw in a swoon worthy Roan who always shows up to protect her but with an ulterior motive. and some real laugh out load moments this book was brilliant.

The reason for my 4 not 5 star is I would have liked a little more chemistry between the two MC'S they seemed reluctant toward each other, even though they would both risk their lives for one another, also Cassandra never seemed to question the things that could help the most, and took a while to clock on she was actually a fae, despite huge hints from other characters she was and the fact she could walk through mirrors and do other neat tricks.

The rest of the book was incredible, the unique magic Cassandra wields was refreshing to read, also the reasons why you can never break a promise to the fae. The dry sarcasm and humour throughout was brilliant, I especially loved when Cassandra became invisible at the police station I was really chuckling. The Author paints a picture so vivid with characters so real it was an absolute pleasure to go on this adventure with them, cant wait to read book 2.

Also at the end of this book was a free link to a quick read from Roan's point of view of the Meet queue which I think was a nice touch.

I just remembered why I very rarely read books about the fae... they are ridiculous! I don't like cassandra, I definitely do not like Roan so I've put it down.... On to different series asap to get this shit out of my head.

So, I have read pretty much all of C.N. Crawford's books... I saw the rating and was like... " I gotta read this" it took me weeks to get past the 50% mark.... but once I did, it was so worth it. I loved this book!
