This book and autonomous are clearly companion books. Newitz loves world building, which this is absolutely rife with, and which Autonomous touches on briefly. This book sometimes got too into the details of the world and society building for me but as it's integral to the plot, I understand the need for it. Slow to get going but a fun ride once it gets moving. I loved the characters in this book, and I loved the way it was written.

At the time that I listened to this book I had been annoyed that I didn't notice the time skip until well into the new time. However, after thinking about this book for over a year now I love the use of time as a storytelling device. The decisions the characters make have a clear impact on the characters in the next story and often on the operations of the civilization.

I have recommended this book to multiple people and it's only a matter of time before I listen to it again.

Interesting treatment of a far flung future where humans are just as shit as they’ve always been, but the vegans and conservationists work together to beat the greedy and the selfish. It was a bit too broad and slow for my tastes, and the characters didn’t seem like complete people.
