A multi-generational story. Unfortunately the conclusion is spelled out too clearly in the early sections. The characters are likable and the world building is good.

DID NOT FINISH

A rare DNF for me. I got more than halfway through before throwing in the towel. This book explores a lot of really interesting concepts but should probably be two books. The first part wraps up quite nicely but then suddenly it's hundreds of years later in the second part, and it's a plodding mess. I really *wanted* to like it, but when I started dreading returning to it I gave up.

I recently gave Kairos by Jenny Erpenbeck 1 star. On reading this, despite my problems with that book, I think that was harsh - it was in many ways well written.

This is not. There might be some interesting ideas behind this book, but the characters, the dialogue are awful. The structure. A lot of the plot too.

It may be the worst book I have read in a long time. I'm baffled that this was published.

I really liked Autonomous by the author, and had great expectations for this book. In the end, I felt the concept was diluted by very weak characterisation and inconsistency of tone.
It's a shame because the ideas being the book were interesting, but it felt as is the author did not have the courage to face all the implications of the setting.
