Exhalation is an exercise of pure imagination. When I think of what I like about sci-fi (or moreso speculative fiction, in this case), these types of stories are what come to mind: Mind-bending, standard-breaking tales.
Every single reviewer relates Exhalation to Black Mirror, and I take great pleasure in agreeing with this notion. It absolutely scratches that itch, showing moral dilemmas that come with technological progress, along with a few supernatural stories to boot. Black Mirror is my favorite TV series of all time, so to see the same anthological sci-fi structure within this book just straight up made me giddy.
It's incredibly hard to pick a favorite here, as I believe all of these stories have something to offer, but some standouts include 'The Merchant and the Alchemist Gate', 'The Truth of Fact, or the Truth of Feeling', and the titular 'Exhalation'. I thought these stories specifically harnessed what I love about this genre. The bar is high here, so even some of the "weaker" stories stand tall on their own.
Exhalation has single-handedly forced my opinion of short story collections to do a 180. Before, I was more inclined to dismiss a story that wasn't able to fully flesh out the world it was in, or go in depth on its characters, but if the quality of the story is as good as what's seen here, who cares? Due to Exhalation, I am more open minded to testing my preconceived notions of certain books. That alone warrants a personal glowing review.

I read this collection of stories but added them separately under MYBOOKS, with the exception of Omphalos. Every story in the collection was great. I have separately given them stars accordingly. For the one that I didn't list separately, Omphalos, I give it 5 stars as I will overall give the whole collection. The stories provide one with much to think about and perhaps even to grow from morally or spiritually.

Each of these stories was a banger in their own right. I would recommend this book to people who don’t even like sci fi because I felt such a wonderful range of emotions reading these stories. Some real good thinkers in here, too.
