I am underwhelmed but the problem is about me I think. I didn't find them emotionally engaging and I didn't find myself exited to dwell on their puzzles and conceits. Maybe because I was reading alongside a long history book and that felt like a chore at times? I can appreciate their elegance and cerebral craft but I found it hard to care!?

Docking half a point for "The Lifecycle of Software Objects." So jarringly bad that I can barely believe Chiang wrote it.
"The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate," on the other hand, may be his finest work.

Intriguing and thought-provoking premises for all the stories.
I never write reviews but this book is absolutely brilliant. If you are a sci-fi lovers, as I am, you’ve probably read most of everything popular and experience a lot of similar stories. These are wholly original and you will find yourself absolutely submerged in new, fascinating worlds and you make your way through each story. So so so good!!!!

I acquired a prism recently and had this conversation with my paraself from another branch:
"Hi, Sebastian"
"Hi, Sebastian"
"So... how things are going in your timeline?"
"Fine... fine... can't complain, really. How about you?"
"Same, everything's working according to God's plan"
"..."
"Just kidding... so how's family?"
"Well... you know, me and my brothers are in good terms and my dad and mom..."
"No, no... I was asking about your own family"
"What do you mean?"
"You know, your wife and kids"
[Laughs] "Funny guy"
"I'm serious. I have two kids and I married..."
"I'd rather not know that piece of information. Thank you [to himself] I can't believe there's a branch in which I'm married and have kids."
"Alltight, so you still a bachelor. That's understandable. At least you are not living with your parents. Am I right?"
[Silence]... "I'm afraid I do"
"Really? I thought that with the advertising agency we own would be enough to go independent"
"I own an advertising agency in that timeline? Here I'm just a librarian".
"Why would I be a librarian?"
"Because, you know, we love books"
"We do? I'm not that much into reading actually but I like Robin Sharma, Eckhart Tolle and the like, some books on publicity and marketing as well"
"Hum... so did you pursuit marketing and publicity as a career?"
"Of course. Remember we had an scholarship in Buenos Aires to study graphic design? And after that we did a master in Marketing"
"Not me, man. I quit two years later to pursuit Visual Arts and Literature".
"Visual Arts? What can you even do with that degree?"
"Hard to explain... what about music? How the practice with you double-bass is going?"
"I like some heavy metal bands but mostly classic rock. The double-bass was the one that looks like a big violin, right?"
"Sort of... you know, I'm starting to think this wasn't a good idea. I'm going to watch a movie. Have you seen the last Hamaguchi's film?"
"Hama what? I don't watch too many films, you know, with business and kids to raise I barely have time"
[Hangs up the prism]
"Hello? Sebastian? Are you there?
[Laughs] "I can't believe he fell for all that bullshit".
[His mother calls him] "Dinner's ready"
"Later mom, I wanna watch the last Hamaguchi's film"
