I would say some of the stories were interesting, but for the most part when they say dark they mean somewhat graphic abuse. I will say a lot of them were thought provoking, but most of the topics are not things I want to think deeply about. Going in I thought dark would be more spooky. I did not like the book and some of the stories will haunt me, so I guess it achieved its goal of horror.

2,28 star avergae out of 5 for all stories, but I still thoroughly enjoyed getting snippets of various cultures and stories from authors I've never heard of. Personally my top 5, in no particular order is:

  • Limbs, Waubeshig Rice
  • Kushtuka, Mathilda Zeller
  • Hunger, Phoenix Boudreau
  • Collections, Amber Blaeser-Wardzala
  • Before I go, Norris Black

And an honorable mention to Darcie Little Badger, who wrote "The scientist's horror story", because I enjoyed her writing style here as much as I did when I read her book "Elatsoe".

I don't like the short stories in audiobook format. It's too confusing. I also don't think this is the book for me. A lot of the stories were interesting, but heavy warning for so many things.

The second story absolutely BROKE me 😭 I wanted to read spooky horror like the Kushtuka, not reality. The book touches on some of the worst aspects of human history, including genocide, discrimination, and dehumanization. It is beautifully written overall. That said, I personally won’t finish it for my mental health.

Wow. All of these were so well written and scary in their own right, genuinely did not read one that I didn’t enjoy. I can definitely see myself coming back to this to reread in the future!

I did have some that I found more unsettling than others that I have to highlight:

Kushtuka - Mathilda Zeller
Hunger - Phoenix Boudreau
Before I Go - Norris Black
Night in the Chrysalis - Tiffany Morris
Scariest Story Ever - Richard Van Camp
Human Eaters - Royce K Young Wolf
Dead Owls - Mona Susan Power
The Prepper - Morgan Talty
Eulogy for a Brother, Resurrected - Carson Faust
Night Moves - Andrea L. Rogers
Capgras - Tommy Orange
The Scientist’s Horror Story - Darcie Little Badger
Collections - Amber Blaeser-Wardzalla
