a famous audiobook narrator wrote a book about audiobook narrators?? sign me Up!!

i loved reading about sewanee and following her personal growth throughout the story. her love for Blah and their special relationship often had me on the verge of tears. her friendship with adaku was an absolute delight to read about as well.

julia whelan included many romance tropes in the story in a very playful and self-aware way (“It feels like we fell out of a Romance tree and hit every trope on the way down.”) i felt like the secret/mistaken identity trope was executed extremely well here. sarah and brock had immaculate banter in their texts and emails. they had great chemistry irl too, and in my opinion the book did not suffer at all from the lack of explicit smut scenes, because the Tension between them was extremely hot as is. i also really appreciated that they communicated so well with each other and had many deep conversations that resonated with me on a very personal level. the fact that we essentially got two separate starts of the same love story is very special and shows that not only are they physically attracted to each other, but they also formed a very deep personal connection without knowing what the other person looks like.

i also loved the insight into the audiobook recording process! wish we could’ve had a tiny bit more of that because the scene of them recording an episode together was hilarious and had me exhaling through my nose several times.

the book did feel too long and a bit underedited and the writing/structure of the story was all over the place sometimes. i feel like it could’ve been told just as well, if not better, in just above 300 pages. even though i really liked the characters and their chemistry, it was hard for me to keep my attention on the story because the author did include a lot of scenes and storylines that weren’t significant to the plot or the relationships and were mostly there for Vibes™️.

overall a very enjoyable read! personally i’m not a frequent audiobook listener, but i would definitely recommend listening to this story as i am sure it is the best way to experience it <3

A good story but it dragged onnnn

I LOVE Julia Whelan as a narrator so I was excited to listen to this audiobook of her own work. I enjoyed the book, but I was surprised at 2 things: 1) how many tropes were included (this is even addressed in the text, which I appreciated and the recognition softened me a bit to the flurry of stuff going on), and 2) how jarring it was at times to listen to the letter section. I found myself having to rewind a bit to figure out who was writing and I wasn't catching the time details so kinda missed the humor of the messages that arrived at the same time. This section would have hit better in print....which was interesting given her expertise in audiobook narration. What I really enjoyed was the way Julia expertly handled the reveal frustration/conflict between the characters. It felt real and not overly dramatic.

Well this was adorable! Bonus, listen to the audio book- narrated by none other than the brilliant author Julia Whelan.

I was actually not all that sold on the romance for some reason, but I liked the main characters arc of learning to appreciate the version of her life and herself that she has even though it's different than what she had imagined. I also loved the behind-the-scenes look at audiobook narration.
