A poetic tribute to the lives and deaths of those sleeping under the soil in the Spoon River Cemetery.
On the whole, it's a drag, but the epitaphs that jump out have a cut-to-the-bone urgency that bares the grist of life as well as anything I know. Read it while listening to Richard Buckner's "The Hill" which faithfully and often hauntingly renders a handful of these poems with the help of Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico.
I read this in high school and liked it. I needed a book of poetry for an audiobook challenge so I checked out the audiobook from the library, It is outstanding. The cast of narrators does an excellent job with the characters, and the ending The Spooniad, is very powerfully read.
Some of it was fascinating, but I got tired.
I'm so glad I read this book. I've heard of it being used by acting students, and back in school, read some excerpts in textbooks.
The premise is the buried folks in the local graveyard get to say a piece. They play off each other and tell the different sides of stories. It is a lot of short little pieces, so works well with my increasingly short attention span. It's funny and poignant and I'm looking for a secondhand copy for my permanent (and very small) library.
