"Ordinary life was sufficiently operatic enough."

I came out of the first book already heavily invested in the Angelique, she of the biting commentary and locked down emotions, but little did I know that she had all this top-shelf banter still waiting to see the light of day. The flirtations in this romance were delightful and enticing, just as they ought to be. Plus, there was just the right amount of angst to perturb the characters (and me).

The side characters so deftly maneuvered into my heart in the first of the series kept me giggling in this one. From the incompetent but enthusiastic maid Dot to the flatulent but earnest Mr. Delacorte, there was plenty to keep me in good humor. All the descriptions are delivered with a wink, including jokes ranging from rude to witty and in some truly lucky moments, a showstopping combination of the two.

I also appreciated Angelique's emotional journey and the joy of seeing her find happiness. I love the way this series is building on itself, and I look forward to the next installment, where the characters and setting are sure to continue to cast a spell over me.
