This book is a classic for a reason. I wasn't sure about Lauren after One Night for Love, but I loved seeing her come out of her shell, accept love and accept herself and her emotions. She is intelligent and considerate and kind, which I don't think I full appreciated in ONfL. Kit was also a good character whose growth felt real and honest and necessary. The Bedwyns had quite an introduction as well!

One of my all time favourite Mary Balogh novels. I avoided it at first because the trope where the hero makes a bed and then tricks the heroine through the entire book is icky to me. This one didn't do that. The main couple communicates very well. I love Kit and his family, and I love the relationship between the hero and heroine. Such a good book.

Rounding up from a 2.5. I don't usually find myself counting the pages to the end, but confess I did with this, which I found overlong, especially when not much happened with a not terribly interesting couple.

I absolutely loved this! It was my first Mary Balogh book (recommended by my favourite romance author Mimi Matthews) and I can’t wait to read more. An actual rake and an actual prim and proper lady - not just thin veneers that wear off after 2 chapters. There was tension and chemistry but also obstacles in the way and I loved how their story unfolded.

Relatable heroine.
Equal parts romance and family saga - I do love a good family saga.
Well-written.
Last 100 pages made me cry, in a good way, as all the family conflicts were resolved.

Really, really disliked the hero, especially at first, when he did nothing but objectify the heroine's beauty. Then he trampled her boundaries for 200 pages. He did start to see her as a person, and treat her with basic decency, but the author seems to think he deserved a medal for this.
Not sure I'm in tune with how the author sees women, men and successful relationships. This book is 23 years old and feels as if it's from the 70s or 80s. I'm not young, but I have changed my mind over the last 20 or 30 years about the kind of romance I like to read. This isn't it.
Final spicy scene is utterly cringe.
Ridiculous character names, suitable for every historical period except the Regency.

A nice summer read :)
