This is an incredible book full of love and heartache and friendship and so much more. The last chapter, dusk, is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read, and it's only a page long. If I ever become a teacher, I want to teach this book.

The first of this set of eight interlocking tales is maybe a little over-written, a little too soapy. But each story is a little more compelling than the last, and by the end, I was in awe. It’s a classic for a reason.
“Time’s passage through the memory is like molten glass that can be opaque or crystallize at any given moment at will: a thousand days are melted into one conversation, one glance, one hurt, and one hurt can be shattered and sprinkled over a thousand days.”
I read this for an upcoming Novel Pairings episode and wow – it was much more powerful than I anticipated. It’s less than 200 pages but packed a punch. It’s a collection of interconnected short stories about black women living in the inner-city. Sometimes funny, sometimes devastating, always thought-provoking. I took so many notes and will be thinking about these women for a long time. Their lessons of generosity, kindness, and vulnerability are life giving.

I might give it 5 stars on a re-read, nuanced exploration of the lives of Black women in American cities.
It goes into a slightly surreal direction at the end, which didn’t really work for me as it did not keep in style with the rest of the novel.

Usually, I feel that books are better than their adaptations however having watched the series during the first lockdown in 2020 and feeling connected to it, I was very happy that the book and series were harmonious.
I loved the power in the 7 stories which made up The Women of Brewster Place. Definitely will be be reading this again and recommending it to anyone who wants to listen.
