First of all, I don’t fault anyone for enjoying the book since the writing was engaging and you truly do feel like you’re inside Zetian’s head. But that was not a head that I was willing to spend 21 hours in. For my own sake, I can’t continue it.

As a trans person, I thought that it was incredibly poor taste to have the main character equate forced genital mutilation to the concept of what about a person’s body makes someone a certain gender, especially with the current political climate equating “mutilation” to the trans experience. That was not the time to create that kind of allegory.

To equate the two, even with a character as troubled as Zetian, was inappropriate.

As far as adventure stories go, this was fantastic. Is it a bit heavy handed at times? Yeah. But still a good time. I’ll read the next one when it’s out.

This book, much like the first one, had me working to dissect my own emotions and beliefs as I read it. I think it built phenomenally from the first, exploring what the price and definition of freedom is as an individual and as a nation. I think its exploration of intersectional experiences in a society with deeply rooted evils was very rich. But I think the central relationship in the book takes the cake as the most interesting part of the book. The fact that it takes you on a journey that ends with you as a reader as conflicted as the protagonist about how to handle it at the end of the book is testament to what an accomplishment this story is.
