Simply amazing-- compelling story, even more compelling writer and woman. Truly a loss to the world of true crime and the world of literature that she is gone too soon. Kept me captivated for days!

This is the first true crime book I've read and I really enjoyed it, the author's writing and setting out of the 'story' was very well paced, and the back and forth timelines really worked, and all the work done really shone through. As well as this, the author's personal narration about her fascination with this case, and true crime in general, was really well done as it was very honest and introspective.

The last parts, completed after the author's passing felt more mechanical, and only highlighted how well the rest of the book was written. But overall it's a really great book, and as my first book in the genre acknowledges the strangeness of our interest in the genre.

This has the makings of a really excellent true crime story. However, the author passed away halfway through the writing of the manuscript, and unfortunately, it shows, despite the efforts of her researcher and friend to complete the book based on her extensive notes. Her depth of research is obvious. Because the Golden State Killer was so prolific, the cast of characters and numerous settings are hard to keep straight, especially for someone unfamiliar with California geography. I read this as an ebook and probably should have opted for the physical version so I could refer to the maps and diagrams more easily.

This book was published before the GSK was apprehended. I would love later editions to append one final chapter about the details of the arrest.
