Outstanding investigative journalism into the Golden State Killer, it's sad the author never saw him arrested but this very much propelled him back into the public eye.
Listened to this on audio but originally read it when it came out several years ago.
I love this book. I love McNamara’s dedication into discovering the identity of the GSK to get justice for his victims. And I love how this book is laid out, interspersed with personal anecdotes about herself, the victim’s stories, the victim’s families stories, and her investigative efforts as well as the investigative efforts of modern day investigators.
Michelle was a fantastic and powerful writer. She was a credit to her profession and it’s hard to imagine the contributions we have lost that she would have provided.
At the same time, it’s increasingly obvious that Michelle is spiraling at times. She’s descending into some of the darkest things a person can see and it clearly is impacting her mental and physical health.
I think part of what makes this book so poignant is 1) Michelle’s untimely death before it could be finished and published and 2) the identification, capture, and trial of the GSK within 5 years of this book’s publication.
The “Letter to an Old Man” at the end of this book will always give me chills. It’s something I read probably once a year, I just seek it out because it is so powerful and a reminder that the wheels of justice never stop turning.

This is an amazing audiobook. However, I believe you will enjoy this book the most if you go in blind. I read too much about this case before I started the audiobook. So, it wasn’t able to hold my attention super well since I’ve already listed to a podcast about it. I wish I had picked this up years ago before I knew anything about the case. However this book is amazing if you love true crime and the author is brilliant.

Dark story but very professionally done and seemed respectful for all the victims.
