this story draws you in….all parts of this are wild and will make you unease in one way or another. one of the better true crime novels that presents the case thrillingly and with great respect to the victims and the families involved. (i highly recommend this book in audiobook format)
Interesting but I wish it was either more about the crimes or more about the author. The mixture was too surface level.
This chilling masterpiece that rises above the trappings of the true crime genre with its human approach and relentless research. Michelle McNamara's writing is incredible, unparalleled in the genre, revealing the intense degree of research and fact-checking that went into her passion for this project.
What's remarkable is the human element that accompanies McNamara's incredible research and attention to detail that no doubt contributed to the actual killer's capture shortly after the author's own untimely death.
As the posthumously written third part eloquently describes, "her writing, at once dogged and empathetic works the specifics into a fluent narrative. Just when the average reader might get fatigued by too many facts, she turns a phrase or shows a telling detail that brings it all around again, a talent evident whether she was writing about herself with self-deprecating charm or exploring the emotions, experiences, and the relatable drama in the lives of victims and their families that took a back seat after the Golden State Killer struck. She clearly fit her own description of one of the pro criminalists in her book: "good criminalists are human scanners."
I'll Be Gone in the Dark is worth sleeping - or trying to sleep - with the light on after reading it.

A wonderful talent lost too soon. I'm not a True Crime expert, but it's hard to deny it's addictiveness. McNamara uses great storytelling strategies to get us into the world of a serial killer investigation: with it's dead ends and the frightening details.
