This book covers a topic I'm incredibly interested in, and I found it absolutely fascinating. It dives deep into the case of the Golden State Killer, and I was surprised by how many details I didn’t know. Michelle McNamara’s research is meticulous and compelling, and it's heartbreaking to know that she passed away before she could finish the book. Thankfully, her husband brought in others to complete it, staying true to her vision.
Even though some people described her as obsessed, her dedication helped keep the case alive in the public eye—and in a very real way, her work contributed to it finally being solved. That part is powerful.
I listened to the audiobook, and while it was long and occasionally hard to follow (especially with all the names and timelines), it was still very interesting and worth the listen. A must-read for true crime fans.

The narrative felt choppy for me. While the authors prose is beautiful and made me want to read on, the book felt disjointed. It could be the result of this book being published posthumously, denying the author the opportunity to refine collaboratively with an editor... or it could be that I’m reading this directly after another non-fiction true crime investigation book that was done well. If you like this genre (nonfiction true crime written as a “thriller”) you’ll likely enjoy this book. If you’re new or indifferent to the genre, there are far better books to start with. A personal favorite is the brain defense.

Although the book was largely unfinished due to the author's death mid way through, therefore being pieced together afterwards, the book was great. It was a bit choppy due to the circumstances but I feel like they did a good job of smoothing out the edges. This book is not one to read sitting at home on a couch at night in a room full of windows but it did send chills down my spine! So glad to hear they caught him. I kept comparing their ideas in the book of who they believe the killer is to the traits of the real one.
