One word: saucy.

A longtime fan of Bourdain's show, I'm not sure why I haven't read this before. Ultimately, I have my obsession with The Bear to thank for this experience. Bourdain's distinctive voice takes you into the belly of the beast that is the culinary world. It's not all glitz and glamour like the plates that come out from behind the doors make it seem. He likens his crew to pirates, a ragtag team of criminals, mysterious persons, and more. Together, they work in harmonious discord to produce pretty damn good food. Through it all, he weaves stories of larger-than-life real people he's worked with, tackles the darker issues, and provides a witty commentary to rival comedians. It's salacious, fun, and shows how much passion he had for the culinary arts.

It's a new favorite read!

Loved it. Would have enjoyed it more if I was alive in the 70’s/80’s, knew more culinary terms, or spoke spanish. I still learned so much and would love to read more of what Bourdain has written. This truly is about the “underbelly” of the kitchen though so go in with the right expectations.

Re-reading after many years; some parts a product of its time but others as funny as they ever were.
