رواية "الخيميائي" من أكثر الكتب التي حازت على شهرة واسعة، حتى أنها أصبحت أيقونة تُترجم لعشرات اللغات وتُقرأ في مختلف الثقافات. لكن تجربتي معها جاءت أقل من التوقعات، ربما لأنني دخلت إليها بأمل كبير أن أجد عمقًا فلسفيًا يغير نظرتي للحياة، فوجدت نفسي أمام سرد أقرب للمواعظ المتتابعة بلغة شعرية أكثر منها أحداث روائية متماسكة.
الترجمة التي قرأتها لم تساعد كثيرًا، إذ بدت وكأنها تفقد النص روحه الأصلية، فتتحول الجمل إلى "كلام مصفصف" منمق بلا حرارة، كما لو أن العمق ضاع في الطريق. قد يكون النص في لغته الأصلية أكثر سلاسة ودفئًا، لكن هنا كان الإيقاع باردًا بعض الشيء.
أحداث الرواية تدور حول سانتياغو، الراعي الإسباني الذي يترك حياته البسيطة لينطلق في رحلة بحث عن كنز مادي وروحي. الشخصيات التي يقابلها، من الملك الغامض إلى التاجر والخيميائي نفسه، كلها رمزية وتُستخدم كأدوات لإيصال رسائل عن القدر، الإيمان، و"أسطورة المرء الشخصية". لكن هذا الطابع الرمزي جعلها أقرب إلى حكاية رمزية مطولة أكثر من كونها رواية ممتلئة بالشخصيات المتحركة والقصص الجانبية.
من أجمل ما بقي معي من الرواية فكرة أن "من يتبع حلمه، تتآمر له الحياة بأكملها"، وأن القلب إذا صمت يجب أن نصغي إليه. هذه المعاني تعطي القارئ دفعة للتأمل في ذاته وطريقه، حتى وإن لم تُقدَّم بأسلوب قصصي مثير.
شخصيًا شعرت أن الرواية قد تُلامس من يقرأها في فترة بحث روحي أو مرحلة بداية رحلة اكتشاف الذات، لكنها قد تخذل من ينتظر حبكة مشوّقة أو بناء روائي محكم. ربما هذا ما جعلني أعطيها ٣ من ٥ بدلًا من ٥.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho follows a young shepherd named Santiago on his journey to fulfil his personal legend. This is a novel that incorporates the ancient practice of alchemy into its story by using the idea of alchemy as a metaphor for the transformative power of personal growth and the pursuit of one's dreams.
I'm not a huge fan of the writing, but Santiago's persistence was definitely interesting to witness. A very short read if you're interested in checking it out.

This is not a Christian book. Or maybe it is, depending on who you ask. If you ask the (historical) Christian he will tell you that this is not a Christian book. If you ask the Alchemist, he will tell you that this *is* a Christian book because to the Alchemist all things are just One Thing. Though wrapped in Christian (and sometimes Muslim) language, this book is certainly about alchemy but maybe not in the way you imagine. You’ve likely heard that alchemy is concerned with the transformation of metals into gold or maybe that it’s about developing the elixir of life which cures all diseases and grants eternal life. And you wouldn’t be wrong, but not all would agree that you are exactly right. As is the case with so many ancient spiritual texts (Christian ones included) their treasure is buried under a literal reading. The alchemy of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is about spiritual transformation of the person, not chemical transformation of the elements. In his own words, “ ‘This is why alchemy exists,’ the boy said. ‘So that everyone will search for his treasure, find it, and then want to be better than he was in his former life. Lead will play its role until the world has no further need for lead; and then lead will have to turn itself into gold. That’s what alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too … Love is the force that transforms and improves the Soul of the World … Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are’ “ (155). I’d say this is a book about mysticism. But it’s also about courage and love. It was a very easy and pleasurable story that I will likely read again. Stay curious. Read. And above all, love
