This book is one of my new favorites! Emma-Jean is such a great character. I love how her personality evolves as she discovers that she can't solve all of the problems at her school with her logical view on life.
Emma Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree by Lauren Tarshis (2007)
I love Lauren Tarshis's little turns of phrase - it's a pleasure to read her writing. I did find the main character slightly disconcerting. Emma-Jean isn't the typical seventh grader. She says things like "Adolescent males engage in conspicuous displays to attract the attention of females." Likeable - yes. Quirky - definitely. And for me, just a bit distracting. No reason is given for why Emma-Jean is so different from the other kids, and it's great to read a story where such a different character is accepted by the others without condition, but I found my attention was sometimes pulled from the story by what Emma-Jean said.
Very good audio book. I love Mamie Gummer (the reader) because she does an excellent job, and also because she's Meryl's daughter.
I have to say, though, that Emma-Jean is pretty much a Vulcan, right? This is like Spock Goes to Seventh Grade. But Colleen isn't a Captain Kirk character to Emma-Jean's Spock. She's just a completely normal, very kind girl who really balances the story nicely.

This is a really charming book with a wonderful heroine. I love Emma-Jean's voice and mannerisms. My only wish is that the book had been solely from her point of view, as I find multiple POVs jarring.
Hilarious look at a girl who doesn't quite fit in at her school. She is unique, funny, and very appealing.
This is one of my favorite books. It is short, and sweet.
TWO YEARS after i finished this book, I still find myself thinking about it. There are no words for my adoration of this book.

I love sweet, brilliantly logicical, yet socially awkward Emma-Jean and her well-intentioned attempts to help the people around her. The tone is pitch-perfect. Very clever.
Add to the growing list of books about kids on the Asperger's/autism spectrum and, like the best of those, a great character study.
