I loved this book! It was worth all the hype.

“For the greatest fear of death is always that it will pass us by. And leave us there alone.”

Backman definitely explores grief, loss, and loneliness in this story, despite what’s described on the surface of a grumpy man (he’s only 59, so I wouldn’t at all call him old) who is mad at the world, especially his persistent neighbors.

I am probably the odd woman odd in this scenario, but I did not love this book. A surprise for me given its major popularity. Honestly, there were times (about the 30% and 70% mark) I about DNFd.  I also wasn’t a fan of the body shaming and animal neglect interactions. The ending pulled the rating up slightly higher for me. While the romance between Ove and Sonja was touching, I felt more bored with repetitive character exchanges than moved by them as I’m sure Backman intended. However, I have hope I will enjoy other books from this author and plan to get to them!

This book was utterly life changing. Ove was the grumpy grandpa we all need. I have had this book on my tbr shelf for years. I kept picking it up and putting it down. However, this time I really dedicated time to it. There are some books that just come to you when you need them the most. This is one of those books. I could probably read it again and again and again and get something different out of it each time. This time reading it I gleaned one thing: be a good person. Or: THIS is how you should be a good person.

I was an absolute wreck reading the final chapter of this book. Backman slowly builds up the language of this setting, who Ove is, and the characters around him in a way that lets your care for them creep in and catch you off guard—just as it does for Ove himself. A moving tale about community, love, devotion, and doing what is right.

A sweet story but I absolutely hated the writing/translation and found grumpy-old-man-being-saved-by-persistent-women a bit tiresome by page 300

Ultimately a bit predictable and too tidy at the end.
