The Birthday Party by Shalini Boland is a gripping psychological thriller that starts with a fun-filled celebration and ends in terror. When Lucy hosts a party for her daughter, everything goes smoothly—until one of the children disappears. What follows is a frantic search, buried secrets coming to light, and shocking truths about those closest to her. As suspicion spreads, Lucy must figure out who she can really trust before it’s too late.
Okay Shaliniiiiiii! This was my first time reading a book by Shalini Boland and honestly, I had no idea who she was or what she was about—but this book made me an instant fan. The twists? Wild. The suspense? Stressful in the best way.
It’s a super quick read, but mostly because I had to know what happened. Her writing style is smooth, easy to follow, and somehow makes you feel like you’re right there spiraling with the characters. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time—every chapter leaves you needing answers now. I’ll definitely be checking out more from her!
If you love domestic thrillers with unreliable characters, tense family dynamics, and those jaw-dropping “wait, WHAT?!” moments—this one’s for you.

Anyway…
This felt like a waste of time. The lead up to finding out what really happened to Elle was boring. The truth that came out at the end was lame. This could’ve been an email.

Thank you Netgalley, Shalini Boland and Amazon Publishing UK | Thomas & Mercer for the eArc of The Birthday Party.
I have enjoyed Shalini Boland books before so I was really pleased getting this eArc. What I like about Shalini books is both her writing style and her little plot twists which makes for a very quick read. I devoured this book within a day and whilst some of the twists are predictable with the nice foreshadowing, there's a couple I didn't see coming!
I also listened to the audiobook who is narrated by Clare Corbett, who I love listening to for these domestic psychological thriller's.
A solid 4 stars
