So this is an unfinished sequel, but it was fun to read a bit more about what Will Tweedy did as he grew up.
So disappointed. Loved the first book. This book should never have been published!
I liked it. It's a shame that it wasn't finished before the author passed away. :/
It’s half a partly finished sequel to Cold Sassy Tree. Title is Time, Dirt and Money which are the three things people worry about as a psychologist told the author. And the second half is reminiscences of the author by her editor.
Since this is an unfinished sequel, it is hard to judge, but I did enjoy the story and was sad I was unable to finish it.
How can you rate an unfinished novel? I can't say I really enjoyed what was written. I mean, it was fine, but it didn't even begin to accomplish what Olive Ann Burns had in mind. I would have liked to have read much more about Sanna and her marriage to Will Tweedy. She sounded like an interesting character, and the fact that the story was based on the author's parents' relationship made it more intriguing.
I knew that Burns had died before finishing this, but I was expecting more of the story. Her notes left me feeling very disappointed, since they seemed to point towards an empty, ungratifying, loveless marriage. But since it was based on her own parents, I (perhaps naively) expected a happier direction: that yes, marriage was hard, sacrifices were made, but that they were a stronger, better couple for it all. ah well. The first still holds a dear place in my heart and this won't soil it for me.
I think I cried through most of this book. Despite being a serious reader I had never even registered that Cold Sassy Tree existed until seeing it at the bookstore a few weeks ago. Read it. Loved it. Wanted more. So hubby picked this sequel-of-sorts for me and it's a perception changer...well, I knew this perspective was in me, but now it's working it's way out. The story continuance is what I went in for, but the author's way of living is what is going to stay with me.
Compared to its predecessor, this is a larger level of depressing. Since Burns died before it was finished, we don't know how it would have ended. As it's based on Burns' family, perhaps it might have upticked in the final pages.
The book is half novel to the point where Burns finished, and the rest a compilation of Burns' notes and her editor's remembrances, which I found interesting. I hadn't realized until I read this that a movie was made of the first book, so I'll have to look for it.
