172 Hours on the Moon took a while to get going for me. Obviously the author has to give us background, set the tone. We have to get to know the characters. Set in the near future there is a lottery for three teenagers to go to the moon. Not alone, of course. With other, experienced astronauts. So Midori (from Japan), Mia (from Norway) and Antoine (from France) are picked. there are a few ominous warning signs but they go as planned. Almost immediately things start to go wrong, people start to die. It's fast paced after that. I was surprised at the ending. I really thought Mia would make it. But, that was part of the great ending. The element of surprise.
I read this in high school and whether or not the writing was actually of high quality, I literally think about the plot twist of this book still to this day. Haunts me
This book was spooky to say the least. I really liked the build up throughout the whole book which I know a lot of other people didn't appreciate but I thought it was very well done. I had no idea how the book was going to end, but I really enjoyed it as dark as that may sound. It took me a long time to finish cuz I'd mostly read it at night but I'd freak myself out too much to put in a good dent. But I definitely recommend checking this book out if you're into science fiction and enjoy being scared.

Honestly, this book was written well and I loved the idea of it, but it just fell a bit flat to me. Not only was it a tad predictable, but it also was slow to get to the action in the plot. The suspense was great, don't get me wrong... it just wasn't as climatic as I was expecting. Overall, I thought it was a great attempt, but it didn't really pan out. Good book, but not fantastic.

I read this book a week ago and I am still creeped out by it!
Set in a distant but familiar future, 172 Hours on the Moon, opens with NASA deciding to reopen missions to the moon. This felt very timely with last year's final space shuttle launch. I know there are more than a few people who were disappointed by this decision. In addition to the reopening of the space program, it is also revealed that during the original moon landng in 1969, the U.S. government built a secret base called DARLAH 2 on the surface of the moon. And if that weren't enough of a twist they're going to be sending three teenagers up to stay at the base for a week (with a crew of highly trained astronauts of course).
I was immediately sucked in by this unique and interesting plot. It was incredibly well researched and the science blended in seamlessly with the story. The amount of detail I know about space/moon could probably fill a tiny journal page but Johan Harstad gives you all the background and information you need in an easy to understand format, but without seeming like he's dumbing it down for the readers. I felt incredibly well informed by the end of the novel and even a little curious to do further research on my own.
I also really loved the wide cast of characters. All three teens are developed equally and it isn't until the last quarter of the book that you find out whether this is an ensemble story or one with a clear main character. I thought this was a neat method and it added an extra layer of mystery to the story as a whole.
But best of all is just how creepy this book is. It's haunting and at times quite disturbing. I loved getting caught up in the mystery and getting spooked by the different plot twists. I was on tenterhooks right until the very last page. And all of this takes place on the moon! Which just provided an awesome and unknown setting for the story to play out on.
Final recommendation: Highly recommended for science fiction fans as well as those who love a good mystery/horror story.

Voy a comenzar diciendo que esperaba mucho más de este libro, porque lo encontré por una recomendación de una youtuber con la que solemos coincidir en gustos. En cuanto supe de qué trataba me interesó mucho, porque siempre me ha llamado la atención todo este tema del espacio y de los misterios que puede esconder, y por ahí me encontré varias reseñas positivas que decían, al igual que esta youtuber, que era una novela que les había inquietado mucho, y que tenía un tipo de terror muy particular. Por todo esto, cuando terminé el libro no podía que estos comentarios fueran acerca del mismo libro que yo acababa de leer, porque no me hacía nada de sentido.
Comenzaré por decir que el libro es demasiado lento al principio, y de verdad, tardamos muchísimo en ir al espacio, en donde se supone comienza la trama principal. Toda la primera parte del libro se dedica a mostrarnos un poco a los tres chicos que irán en esta misión. Y, a ver, no tendría ningún problema con esto si fuera a ser de utilidad luego. O sea, si el libro hubiera profundizado realmente en los personajes y sus relaciones a lo largo de la historia, no tendría tanto conflicto con el hecho de que se dedicaran tantas páginas a mostrarnos su vida en la Tierra. Pero, claro, no es así, sino que pronto nos enfocamos en el misterio y nos olvidamos por completo de que estos personajes tenían una historia, porque todo esto pasa a segundo plano. Por esta misma razón, absolutamente ninguna muerte me dolió. De verdad, todos los personajes me fueron totalmente indiferentes. Incluso hay un intento de romance, lo cual hace todo peor porque no me creo nada de su química ni por un segundo.
Luego de ver que los personajes no tenían esperanza de estar bien explorados, dije "bueno, aún nos queda la trama". Y las cosas no iban tan mal. Cuando por fin nos encontramos en el espacio y comienzan a suceder varias cosas extrañas, hay varios momentos que sí me gustaron. Por ejemplo, de las primeras cosas que suceden, cuando unos de los de la misión (ni siquiera intenten que recuerde los nombres, porque si no recuerdo los de los tres chicos, menos los de cualquier otro personaje) salen de le estación para reparar unas cosas, y se quedan encerrados en la cabina esa sin razón aparente. Ese fue un buen momento, y ahí todo pintaba bien, por lo menos. Sin embargo, de repente todo sucede muy rápido, y pues como no, si nos quedaba poco del libro y de alguna forma tenía que acabar, porque decidieron pasarse la mitad de la novela con todo el previo a la misión.
Esto provoca que los momentos de misterio ni siquiera se puedan apreciar, porque todo comienza a empeorar de repente, y mientras que en un momento estamos apenas dándonos cuenta de que algo raro está sucediendo, al siguiente ya tenemos a la mitad de los personajes muertos y a los otros sin saber qué hacer. Y es que la idea tenía mucho potencial, porque cuando descubrimos que detrás del misterio están unos Poltergeist a mí me pareció muy buena idea, y me interesé de nuevo en ver qué sucedía con esto. Error, porque de nuevo, empieza a ir todo tan rápido que varias cosas que suceden se sienten hasta ridículas, y en vez de provocarte miedo sólo hacen que te quedes como "¿qué está pasando aquí?".
Pero aún hay algo que rescatar, porque el final, aunque lo sentí un poco predecible, al menos me gustó. Es un final abierto, pero creo que quedó muy bien. Aunque, de nuevo, todo pasa muy rápido, y cuando menos te das cuenta, ya se terminó. Y no me malentiendan, el libro en general no es malo, sólo creo que está MUY desperdiciado, porque se enfoca en cosas que no creo que debería haberse enfocado, y deja de lado los puntos fuertes que sí tenía la trama. Mis partes favoritas fueron los misterios del espacio, y ese contenido es casi nada en comparación con lo que pasamos viendo a los chicos en sus hogares descubriendo el concurso y en la NASA preparándose para la misión.
Me gusta la idea, y debo decir que también me causó sensaciones extrañas en ciertas partes (porque el solo hecho de pensar en la soledad y el misterio que representan la luna y el espacio es aterrador). Pero no fue para nada lo que esperaba, y creo que son mucho más abundantes los momentos que no me convencen que los que sí lo hacen. A ver, tampoco fue lo peor, pero creo que en parte la culpa es mía, por haber ido tan emocionada con la idea de terror en el espacio, y no pensar en que podría no resultar tan bien como yo pensaba.
