The action starts right away in this book when a robot awakes with “two and a half memories” and just about to get scrapped as junk. He thinks his name is Boot, because it’s the first thing he says when he wakes (but actually it was a command to boot up!)
One scrap is followed by another in this warm, funny, (scary!) adventure of friendship and bravery. Boot is convinced that his owner Beth must not have meant to throw him away. He and his newfound friends have to navigate clues from his two-and-a-half memories to find his way back.
This reminded me very much of the movie Wall-E, but in a book for younger readers. The world is one populated equally by robots and humans. It’s a great beginning of a series on Boot that 7-9ers will love, especially with the generous black and white illustrations by Ben Mantle.

Why is this so cute???? I'm not even a fan of robots, but this..... I LOVE IT!! Ohh, Boot... He just breaks my heart, builds it back together and lifts it up. I love the other characters, especially Red, poor thing.
A tiny robot wakes up in a scrap yard. He's alone and about to fall into the grinder. He has two and a half memories and a butterfly pendant - and a longing to find his owner and go home again.
Boot is absolutely adorable. He's a roundy, scaredy, brave as hell little fighter, determined to get back to Beth no matter what. His determination infects other robots as well and he gathers a small posse as he travels through the city looking for her. The illustrations are fantastic. This will be a very popular new series.
A great read.
"If Boot isn't my name, what is my name?" I asked. This idea made me feel dizzy, even though the ground was flat here.
"I have no idea," said Noke. "It could be Pinocchio for all we know."
"Why would my name be Pinocchio?" I asked.
"Never mind," said Noke.
