An important graphic novel to read. I liked the choice to black and white drawings. Just a start in learning more of the history that gets so quickly forgotten and must be remembered by all for us to learn from this land and our ancestors - to learn what paths and ways of thinking we must walk away from.

The artwork is gorgeous, and it's a compelling peek into a segment of history I know very little about. I was disappointed to realize it was not written by someone with any particular connection to the Apache, though - if anyone recommendations for works with closer connections, let me know.

I like Mr. Hawke. In regards to being an actor, he has not always taken the most convenient road in the movies that he has starred in. He seems very passionate in everything that he does. Therefore, I am not surprised that this book turned into a labor of love. It showed in the storytelling as well as the graphics. Mr. Ruth did an amazing job to tell the story through his illustrations.

I am actually glad that Mr. Hawke was turned down by Hollywood to turn the story into a movie. I felt that this medium of a graphic novel was so much better than a movie could be. Which, this is a "graphic" novel in all aspects. There is nothing pretty about war. I did feel like a part of the "true" history was exposed with this book. Having not been very familiar with the Apache Wars, I am more intrigued to learn more about this history. Indeh is a tabletop book and conversation piece (in a good way).

The art in Indeh is phenomenal. I absolutely loved the images on the page; they completely stole the show. The story and words weren’t impressive. I’ve already forgotten a majority of them. However, the drawings are still in my head. They were so powerful, and Ethan Hawke was lucky to find such an amazing partner on this project. Even if you don’t read Indeh, at least open it and look at the pages. Amazing!

Where are the women? The description needs to be revised to “told from the perspectives of Apache MEN”. If this had been a movie it would have wildly failed the Bechdel test. The art is beautiful, and I don’t regret the time spent reading it. But, this story feels skin-deep when half of the Apache culture / population is not represented anywhere in the book aside from death scenes. Without first establishing the culture and lives of the Apache before diving into the shock factor what was violently taken from them...gives them a two-dimensional portrayal as only victims rather than people.

The concept was decent but it was too quick and too shallow to really cover a complete story. It's unfortunate that a high profile name didn't invest more time into accuracy if his goal really was to show the truth (so he claims) and not add to the Hollywood cesspool of falsehoods about native history and realities (as it ends up doing).
