Dnf at 15%.

Here's the thing. I'm an adult now. And I enjoy YA as a genre! It's good!

But i felt too old for this book. Like. Maybe it's just me. But I am weary of sharp teenagers who sass one another. You're not endearing! You're kind of annoying actually. This book makes me feel like: how did the adults in your life fail you this hard? Please, can you explain?

This boy just boiled someone alive from the inside for information and killed a child. And I'm like. Oh wow. Do you feel cool now. How does that help with your anxiety and your incredibly low self esteem. More or less than the alcoholism? You're an actual war criminal.

But he's not the bad guy, he's a love interest. I think? I think he's supposed to be hot. He is not hot.

Because listen! I just. Don't like people who torture people! I don't want to root for them. Maybe if he was charming but, like, he's not. He's just sharp and sassy like every other character in this book. I don't think anyone has said an actual clever or funny thing.

The premise is interesting! I just don't care enough about anyone at this point. They all kind of suck and are wary and distrustful of one another and there are no adults. Why are teens in charge of armies? Who is in charge here? Don't point me to a 17 year old. They are not even in charge of their hormones.

This book was well recommended to me by someone who I trust, so i tried it despite the name sounding like something I would hate. And i kind of feel like someone offered me a really great pastry and I took it and it turns out to be a stale, thawed grocery-store macaron. I will eat it. And i will hate it. But i will nod at least. The best thing I can say about it is that someone made it.

The best thing I think i can say about this book is that she wrote it and got it published. That took some effort! But that's all the praise I have for it.

A star has been removed for torture. A star has been removed for child murder. A star has been removed for the blood mage wizard boy who, I think, I am supposed to think is hot. Another star has been removed because I can't tell any of the characters apart, because they don't have any personalities.

One star remains because, uh, she published I guess? Whatever, man.

Total score: 1/5

DNFing this one - it's been a slog to get through this far even with an audiobook read-along, and after finding allegations of antisemetism in the writing + premise of how blood magic is used in the series, I'm not interested in continuing.

I did not care about Nadya or Malachiasz and their relationship so the first half of the book was a slog to say the very least and things only really started to pick up for me in the last ~30-40% of the book.

The prose sucks and yet I loved the book. The creative magic system is fun though a little too edgy what with the whole blood thing. Honestly, the amount of spilled blood and blood descriptions became kind of ridiculous because it was just too extreme.

Still a four despite the MANY flaws. Purly based on its really high entertainment value. But it's certainly not for everyone and it comes with a lot of trigger warnings!

I'll put my full review here after I've had time to finish reflecting on this read.

It is extremely easy to empathize with Nadya's way of thinking and her internal conflict throughout the whole book, which makes you feel the same heartwrenching emotions that she eventually feels. It also is surprisingly interesting to hear about the setting's politics, something that I wouldn't think I would be interested in. Easy 5/5 stars.
Edit: A bit after this review, I learned that the author was anti-semetic and racist. I have brought my review down to 3.5/5 stars not only because of that but also because after reading some other reviews, I noticed some more flaws with this book that I hadn't before. It was engaging and fun to read but definitely has its flaws. And the author shouldn't be supported.
