(And that’s being generous)

I had high expectations for this because Giant Days is my favourite comic series ever, but everything about By Night was a disappointment.

I wasn’t in love with the art or the characters or the story. Heather really got on my nerves and Jane seemed very inconsistent with her personality but I liked her the most. I really didn’t care for the story overall, the premise sounded much better than the execution.
I will not be continuing the series.

I love, love, love Giant Days, and I've been following that series for quite some time. I haven't tried "Bad Machinery" yet, but it's on my list. Still, when the "By Night" popped up on my radar, I was curious. Then the first issue was on sale on Amazon/Comixology, so I thought, what the hell, I'll give it a whirl. Because they were like $0.99, I decided to get the first two issues. A lot of times it takes me a few issues in a series before I can decide whether or not I'm going to commit to it.

Even after having purchased them, it was a few more weeks before I actually picked them up. I decided to catch up on the comics I had of Giant Days and Lumberjanes before I tried By Night.

Man, am I glad I finally picked it up!

I enjoyed the first issue. It's quirky and fun, but the moment that my heart really connected to it was the moment that Barney's thought bubble about his struggles came up (which was about two pages in). I felt so connected to both Jane and Barney at that moment that I knew I would be reading more.

The mystery is set, and the adventures have begun. And I can't wait to see what comes next.

By Night is a new series by Boom! Box. What originally caught my attention to the series was the art style. I know I say that a lot with Boom! Box series, but it’s too. They have such a unique style to them that’s hard to ignore. It’s all bold shapes and bright colors and I just love it.
It took me a little while to get into the groove of things here, but I guess that isn’t terribly surprising considering it’s a new series and all. It’s clear that there’s a lot more going on here than meets the eye. I can’t say for sure what, other than that big obvious hint at the end…
While I’ve grown quite fond of Jane, but I’m having trouble liking Heather. It’s clear that she isn’t telling Jane the whole truth, but without knowing how far that goes it’s hard to be willing to trust even a single word she says. I hope that is revealed soon so I can relax and enjoy things.

Little bit frustrated with the message "Your life is boring and you must put yourself in danger to really LIVE" I know it's a popular narrative. But not all of us get to go to Narnia, even if we want to.

2.75 Stars. Not a fan of the characters, pacing, or style. Won't be going further with this story.

By Night is a promising first issue from John Allison, who i find does very well with longer arcs, so i'm expecting more from this book.

Jane is very well characterized, and even the opening panels/art have some great character moments.

There's a lot of different plot threads introduced in this first issue, i'm excited to see what they pull first.

I saw a Black Girl on the cover, which made me read the description, which led me to check it out. My interest is definitely piqued. We don’t have much character development in this issue but we know Jane lives in her hometown with her parents doing a job she doesn’t too much enjoy. Routine emerging adulthood things. Her former best friend Heather is just sitting on the stairs outside of her job (surreeeee). They reconnect and after some choice words and hurtful truths from Heather, they’re off on an adventure to this abandoned mansion. The ending is very much “you are going to have to read issue 2 for this” and I will.

I want to learn more about these two and their friendship in high school. How much has Jane changed? Where has Heather been? What’s this story of Heather getting Jane fired once before? Who is the lady across the street? Did Heather plan all of this?
