What an endearing and weird manga this is.
Throughout my feelings were constantly switching between love and confusion. It somehow with its’ unique and surrealistic style captures very real and uncensored moments of childhood. A very tragic childhood, mind you.

The creator himself has admitted that the cuteness of Punpun’s design was intentionally so. He knew the darkness of the story he wanted to tell would throw of a lot of readers, so he pulled them in with this adorable bird-ghost-human-hybrid.
And even in some very dark moments there is this cuteness to Punpun. Similar to children will retain some innocence even when the world around them are from that.

Definitely picking up the next volume to follow Punpun into his downward spiral. Because that’s undoubtedly where we’re heading.
And I have sneaking suspicion that this series will only get better, and gradually reveal its’ genius.

Although this manga is clearly a labor of love, I felt like having a sexual tinge to a story of someone reminiscing about childhood minimized the whimsical elements to it. I would only recommend this to someone that is specifically looking for an unusual take on a "childhood slice of life" type of story. That being said, I am interested in reading the second volume because I want to see punpun grow up lol.
