I can't bear that they, and everybody, should think people wicked because they may have chosen to live their own way!”

Two stars for Hardy!!! I cannot believe it either.   Jude the Obscure is missing elements of previous Hardy novels I read - Tess, Return of the Native, Far from the Maddening Crowd, and Mayor of Casterbridge.  Jude is missing rich nature descriptions, nothing like Moors having its own chapter like Return of native or storm set piece with Gabriel Oak and Bathsheba. Flat characters, there is no Eustacia Vye, Holden would not admire Sue or Arabella.

Yes, tragic, unnecessarily so in my opinion. Controversial views of religion and marriage.

Stilted dialogue either lackluster character development. Plot was slow until the end, slow is okay but not so without the typical Hardy poetic descriptions.

The first part of the book was 4 stars, then the second part became preachy and beat you over the head with the Christian morals. I was rolling my eyes at Sue.

My goodness. I'm glad I didn't read this in college like I was supposed to. It was depressing. I see so much of myself in Jude. We are so alike. And I feel like life is treating me mostly the same.

Regardless of the sheer, overwhelming sadness of the book, I'm glad I read it. Now I can put it on the shelf and forget it.

hardy’s writing is perfectly enticing. his prose is delicate and rich. however i found the characters in this novel disagreeable after around halfway through. sue was generally speaking annoying. however it really picked up when jude 2 did his thing ! that had me shocked i must say. i did not care for any of the characters and it saddened me somewhat that jude abandoned his intellectual passions time and time again.
